Influence is not all that an a-list blogger has that is valuable to an aspiring blogger like myself.
I started blogging to meet people, encourage discussion, write about things that interest me and belong to a community. After attempting to blog for some time I have made the following observations:
- It is very lonely having a blog with no traffic
- It is hard to write when you do not know what people want to read
- It is hard to be happy with a post if you do not feel you should be happy with it
- It would be nice to have at least one RSS subscriber that is not yourself
- The only tips that people share on their posts are ones that they often break themselves
- The purpose of blogging about a niche is to only blog about that niche, but defining a niche is something only those who have done it before can do.
- The more one looks at ones Alexa rank the less people want to visit your site.
- All the hard work in writing posts is lost when you decide to delete them because you perceive them as being off topic
- It is particularly hard to avoid simply writing about your own feelings and life and focus on the topics you wish to blog about.
- If your strive for success and feel unsuccessful then your self-esteem can suffer.
After making these observations I have concluded that whilst I may have ambition, expert knowledge in a variety of fields and moderate writing ability; these are not enough to distract people from their usual course of reading the same web pages day after day. I have noticed that there are stats about how many blogs are created every second of every day, I have started to feel that a similar number may be being abandoned with similar frequency.
How Big Bloggers Can Help
If you want to do something well the best thing to do is to learn from a professional. This is something that I have quickly learnt in my educational and working lives. Success for me is creating a product that people want to read, contribute to, enjoy, share and promote. Reading tips from those in the know is insufficient, what needs to be done is real advice, personalized and relevant to your situation. A-List bloggers have this ability.
If I was to be in regular contact with a ‘mentor blogger’ they would be able to give me tips, point me in the right direction and show me examples of what I should be doing. Even without their influence (which is not what I would necessarily want) their keen eye, experience, literary skills and technological knowledge would be invaluable. This is why I would like to be noticed.
An A-List blogger’s attention would be much more valuable to me than a B, C, D… or Z list blogger like myself. I would like any one’s assistance I can but a high-profile, successful individual would by virtue of gaining their position have been through similar situations than I have, know what they would do differently next time and have a formula to attract readers and keep their attention. Success breeds success and I would like to be a part of it.
Please stay tuned for my next post where I have been collecting tips and ideas about how to gain the influential’s attention (but not necessarily their trust, advice or friendship) and outline the skills I plan to use to get where I want to be.

Interesting and amusing post, as is your profile.
I know well that feeling of sometimes wondering if you are talking into an empty room. So I like your idea of mentor bloggering. Although I am not quite sure where you are going with it.So I guess I will just have to come back and see.
Good luck with law school.
[…] for all the feedback from my last post - Why You Should Want an A-List Blogger to Notice You - Many of the ideas I was sent are incorporated in this post, and others may be a separate venture […]
I wonder if this is a gut feeling or is it something you’ve gained from experience. It would be great as a newbie to know who the a-list bloogers are.
Douglas,
These are things that have been written by a-list bloggers and I am trying. If you want to know the kind of people A-List bloggers are - things like the the Technorati 100 (http://technorati.com/pop/blogs/) and BlogLines (amongst others) http://www.bloglines.com/topblogs will give you a good idea of what people are reading and who the influential bloggers behind these sites are
